This article discusses the basics of how to mark up a PDF. It covers everything from highlighting and comments to custom stamps and redactions.
Highlight
- In the “Comment” tab on the top ribbon tool bar, right click either “Highlight Text”, “Highlight Area”, or “Free Highlight.”

- Select the color you would like to use for your highlighter from the drop-down menu.

- Use your mouse to highlight the desired area of the document. Below is an example of how each highlight tool appears when used: “Highlight Text” is yellow, “Highlight Area” is gray, and “Free Highlight” is blue.

Underline
- In the “Comment” tab on the top ribbon tool bar, select “Underline.”

- Once “Underline” has been selected, click on the “Format” tab on the top ribbon tool bar. Here, you can select the color, style, and thickness of your line.

- Once you've selected your preferred settings, use your mouse to underline the desired words. Below are examples of different line colors, styles, and thicknesses.

Strikeout
- In the “Comment” tab on the top ribbon tool bar, select “Strikeout.”

- Once “Strikeout” has been selected, click on the “Format” tab on the top ribbon tool bar. Here, you can select the color and thickness of your line.

- Once you've selected your preferred settings, use your mouse to strikeout the desired words, as seen below.

Replace Text
- In the “Comment” tab on the top ribbon tool bar, right click “Replace Text” and select the color line you’d like to use.

- After making your selection, highlight the text you want to replace. It will appear as shown below.

Sticky Note (Comments)
- In the “Comment” tab on the top ribbon tool bar, select “Sticky Note.”

- Once “Sticky Note” has been selected, click on the “Format” tab on the top ribbon tool bar. Here, you can select the color and icon you would like to make your sticky note.

- Place the selected shape on the page. You can then drag the note to your desired location and add your message.

- To delete a sticky note, ensure it is unlocked (the lock icon at the bottom should be open), then right-click the note and select “Delete” from the menu.

Redaction
- In the “Protect” tab on the top ribbon tool bar, select “Mark for Redaction.”

- After selecting “Mark for Redaction,” click the “Format” tab in the top ribbon toolbar. Here, you can customize the redaction box by adjusting the fill color, opacity, overlay text, and other settings.

- Next, place the redaction box over the desired area of the document. It will appear as shown below.

Custom Stamp
- In the “Comment” tab on the top ribbon tool bar, select “Stamp.”

- After selecting “Stamp,” click the “Format” tab in the top ribbon toolbar. Then, right-click on a stamp and choose “Add New” from the pop-up menu, followed by “Add Custom Stamp.”

- A window will appear (as shown below) where you can create a custom stamp using an image, text, or both. For example, to create an image stamp, click the icon that shows a photo.

- Browse your computer to select the image you’d like to use, then click “OK.”

- A confirmation window will appear asking you to verify the selected image. If it's correct, click “Place.” If not, click “Cancel” and choose the correct image.

- Next, give your stamp a title and choose a stamp collection to save it to. In this example, the stamp is named “University Logo 1” and saved in the “Custom” stamp collection.

- Your new stamp will now appear in the drop-down menu under the “Comment” tab.

- To use the stamp, simply select it from the list and place it on the desired area of the page.
