You may find a red warning on your email if the University's spam filter suspects it may be malicious. Most of these emails will already be in your Junk folder within Outlook.
Example:
Please use caution before clicking on any links or opening attachments!
As a rule of thumb, consider these things before interacting with the email:
1. Is there an urgency to the message? Such as a request to verify by opening the attachment, or a penalty that may occur?
If the answer is yes, do not interact. A&M-Victoria IT will not request verification over email or text message.
2. Is there spelling or grammar mistakes?
If the answer is yes, it is likely not a legitimate email.
3. Is there a generic greeting?
If the answer is yes, do not open it.
4. Who is it coming from? Does the domain of the email not match? (Example: Its claiming to be Help Desk but coming from a gmail account. Help Desk will only ever come from @tamuv.edu)
If the user and domain do not match, do not open it. A&M-Victoria will only reach out from a @tamuv.edu email.
5. If you hover over the link to see where it is directing, does it match what the content says? Example:
If it does not match, do not open it.
6. Did you request or were you expecting an email from the person?
If you were not expecting the request or content, do not open.
